We’ve been friends since we were young, and were initially drawn to each other by the artwork the other did (which was anime-esque, haha). As a few years passed, our art styles changed and developed; her taking on a more (semi-)realism feel, while I stayed within the realms of cartoons/abstract, etc.
It didn’t take long for the “Why don’t you draw like your friend? Her artwork looks so much more professional/just better” and other variants of those questions to be asked. I didn’t have any interest in realism; I appreciate it for what it is, but it just wasn’t something I desired to pursue. Whenever I tried to explain this, I was met with harsh remarks of just not wanting to try, being lazy, or just not having the proper skills.
After 3 years of constant comparison and degrading comments, I stopped trying. I still draw and such, but the pictures stay permanently hidden away in sketch books. My friend has continued to succeed in the field of art, and i’ve faded away entirely.
I hate myself for it.

i really wish tumblr wasn’t so unforgiving because it’s resulted in this overly cautious environment where everyone is deathly afraid to be unintentionally offensive
there is no surefire way to avoid offending someone, offensive content varies from person to person and there is absolutely no way to satisfy everyone
and because of that you shouldn’t have to walk on eggshells. make mistakes, learn from them, have a good time.

And people wonder why authors use italics and bold and shit so reader’s understand what’s going the fuck on.
And of course I just read this in my head 7 times, stressing each word differently.
